Explorer, Sailor, and Settler - compare scope, fees, and what's right for your situation.

Built from the ground up for expats.

These elements are built into every engagement - not bolt-ons. Cross-border complexity is our starting point, not something we accommodate.

US–Spain tax treaty links

All applicable tax treaties between the US and your country of residence, incorporated directly into your financial plan.

Expat IRS expertise

FBAR, FATCA, PFIC, and Form 8938 handled. IRS deadlines, extension rules, and foreign income exclusion - all built in.

Global investment awareness

MIFID II-aware portfolio construction. We know what US citizens in the EU can and cannot hold - and how to work around restrictions.

Fiduciary standard — always

Every recommendation we make is legally required to serve your interest. No commissions, no product incentives, no conflicts.

What you receive - in detail.

The 360° designation means the plan covers every dimension of your financial life simultaneously — investment planning, tax planning, retirement planning, estate planning, insurance review, and cross-border compliance — rather than treating each in isolation. For American expats this interconnection matters: liquidating a brokerage account affects Spanish wealth tax, your IRPF bracket, and your US capital gains calculation all at once. Our services overview explains how the three phases build on each other.

The Explorer package is designed exactly for this: a comprehensive cross-border financial plan and planning simulations for $3,000–$6,000, delivered over approximately 3 months, with no initial engagement fee and no ongoing commitment. Many clients start with Explorer and later move to Sailor or Settler once they want implementation, tax preparation, and continued advisory. See the full package comparison for what Explorer does and does not include.

For US returns we prepare Form 1040 (including Schedule B, Schedule D, and applicable foreign schedules), Form 2555 (FEIE) or Form 1116 (Foreign Tax Credit), Form 8938 (FATCA Statement of Foreign Financial Assets), and FinCEN 114 (FBAR), plus state returns where applicable. For Spain we prepare Modelo 100 (IRPF annual income tax), Modelo 720 (overseas assets declaration), and Modelo 714 (Spanish wealth tax where applicable). Tax preparation is included in the Settler Tier 2+ package and is available as a paid add-on to the Sailor package from $2,000/year.

Each quarterly review is a structured 45–60 minute meeting against an updated version of your financial plan. We review investment performance, tax position year-to-date, cash flow against projections, any life events since the last meeting, and upcoming filing deadlines (FBAR by October 15, Spanish IRPF by June 30, Modelo 720 by March 31). You receive a written summary of the session documenting agreed actions, updated figures, and any changes to the plan — so there is a clear record of every decision made.

Portfolio management means we hold discretionary investment authority over your US accounts — we build, rebalance, and adjust a portfolio of US-domiciled ETFs and funds without needing your approval for each trade. We specifically construct portfolios to avoid PFIC exposure, use tax-loss harvesting where appropriate, and coordinate asset location across taxable and tax-deferred accounts to minimise your combined US and Spanish tax liability. We work with custodians that accommodate non-US resident Americans, including Schwab International and Fidelity. AUM fees are tiered: 1% on the first $1.5M, 0.75% on $1.5M–$3M, and 0.50% above $3M.

Yes - unconditionally. Every plan, report, tax return, and document we prepare is yours to keep. We do not hold documents as leverage or restrict access on termination. We also provide a formal off-boarding summary that documents your current financial position, open compliance items, upcoming deadlines, and recommended next steps — so that you or any successor advisor can pick up without losing continuity.
