Medicare & Healthcare

  • Medicare generally does not pay for health care you receive outside the United States. That single fact drives the whole decision, and it catches people who assumed coverage would travel with them.
  • So the question is not whether Medicare covers you abroad. It is whether to keep paying for coverage you are not currently using, and what it costs to restart it later if you drop it now.
  • That answer depends on how long you expect to be in Spain, whether you plan to return, what the late enrollment penalties would be, and what the Spanish system provides you in the meantime. None of those is obvious, and the penalty structure in particular is easy to underestimate.
