Driving in Spain With a US License

You can drive in Spain on a US license for your first six months as a resident. After that you cannot.

Spain has no license exchange agreement with the United States. So you have to take the full Spanish driving test to keep driving legally.

That is the whole story in three sentences. It is also the item people most often discover late. Here is what to do about it.

The first six months

During your first six months of residency, your valid US license is generally enough.

Carry it with an International Driving Permit. The permit is not a license in its own right. It is an official translation of yours into several languages.

Rental companies usually ask only for your license and passport. A traffic officer may ask for the permit.

So get one before you travel. They are issued in the United States, not in Spain.

Why you cannot just exchange your license

Spain has exchange agreements with a number of countries. Under those, a foreign license can be swapped for a Spanish one without testing.

The United States is not among them.

This surprises Americans more than almost any other piece of relocation admin. It surprises people who have driven for forty years without incident.

Nationality and experience do not change it. Without an exchange agreement, the route is the same as for a new driver.

Getting a Spanish license

You apply through the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico, the provincial traffic authority. The process has two examinations.

The theory test is multiple choice, on Spanish traffic law and signage. It is offered in Spanish and, in some provinces, in English. Confirm what is available where you live.

The practical test is an on-road driving examination. In practice almost everyone prepares through an autoescuela, a licensed driving school. The school also handles much of the paperwork.

What you need to assemble

A certificate of physical and mental fitness from an authorized assessment centre, a centro de reconocimiento de conductores
The application form and passport-sized photographs
Your residence documentation and proof of address in Spain
A declaration that you are not disqualified from driving and do not already hold an equivalent EU license

Two practical notes. Lessons must be taken through a recognized school, not with a family member. And most cars in Spain are manual, so a license obtained in an automatic carries a restriction. If you have only ever driven automatics, factor that in.

Plan the timing

The six months runs from when you become resident. It does not run from when you decide to deal with it.

The process also takes longer than people expect. Add the medical certificate, school availability and examination waiting times, and the months go quickly.

Start in the first month or two rather than the fifth.

Driving past the six month window on a US license leaves you without valid cover. An insurance dispute is a much more expensive problem than a driving school.
